What is Robotics?

A robot is an autonomous system which exists in the physical world, can sense its environment, and can act on it to achieve some goals.( Maja Mataric)

  • Autonomous: Not controlled by a person
  • Exists in the physical world: Not simply a program
  • Senses its environment: Has sensors- such as touch, sound, distance, and light
  • Can Act on it: Has motors and other effectors( sounds, displays, etc) that enables it to do things
  • Can achieve Goals- The robot's behavior is controlled by its program

Is a search engine a robot? Is a thermostat a robot? Is a DVD player a robot?
