Additional Material

In Mass Production, the complex job of designing and building something is broken down into specialized jobs.

This gives great advantages of efficiency, and achieves higher quality with less expertise needed on the part of the workers.

The down side is less interest and pride on the part of the workers.

Mass Production of Straw Beam Bridges

  • Station 1: Produce beam couplers (36) - cut straws in half, cut lengthwise

  • Station 2-3: Produce 14” beams- insert coupler into 2 straws, wrap with 1” of scotch tape (36 +)

  • Station 4: Layout bottom layer of (3) lengthwise long beams (template, long beams, masking tape pieces)
On template, tape down 3 parallel long beams with masking tape

  • Station 5: Add cross beams—tape 5 cross-beams in place (assembly 3, straws, tape)

  • Station 6: Add top layer of long beams, pin into place ( assembly stage 4, long beams, pins)
  • Station 7: Trim Cross-straws
Station 8- add 2 diagonal beams, pin into place, trim

  • Optional Station 9- on underside, add additional layer of cross-beams (5); additional long beams (3)

  • Station 10: Quality Control

  • Station 11: Materials movement
